The city began looking at constructing a new Westminster Avenue Bridge in 2016

A Ladner bridge rehabilitation project, which was put off by the city several years ago, has been reinitiated.

The city has issued a call for bids for an engineering consultant to come up with a rehabilitation design of the Westminster Avenue Bridge, which runs over the Chillukthan Slough.

The city is looking for someone to inspect the bridge to note the current condition and measure the current corrosion rate, as well as prepare a detailed design for the bridge’s rehabilitation.

Construction would commence later this year.

According to the city’s engineering department, the Westminster Avenue Bridge was constructed in 1956 and has no record of rehabilitation work.

In 2014, Delta installed truck load limit signage at the structure following recommendations from a load evaluation.

In recent years, Delta has installed gates along the Chillukthan Slough that control the water flow during the irrigation season, the engineering department notes, adding this change in hydraulic flow and speed may have further contributed to the deterioration of the bridge.
