Ladner's Kiana Passmore will be competing for the Miss World Canada crown in May at the River Rock Casino Resort.

Passmore, 18, says she's big on performing, being on stage, helping people and volunteering.

"This competition I felt was one big combination of that," she says.

Passmore, a singer, has performed at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival as well as in Delta Arts Council's Young People's Concert Series and is a former B.C. Junior Talent Search winner. She is currently working on her first single, which she wrote along with her sister.

"I've done lots of performing and I really like being in front of people and showing what I have."

She hasn't been in any pageants in the past but says she's optimistic about competing in Miss World Canada.

"I think everybody has a good possibility of becoming Miss World Canada, it really just depends how much you want it and how much you're willing to do for Variety, for people around you and just being a good person, being a good ambassador for Canada," she says, noting contestants raise money for Variety - The Children's Charity.

Passmore, who graduated from Delta Secondary last year, is planning fundraising events for Variety this month and started off with a bottle drive in Ladner last Sunday.

While she's already got sponsorship from Harbour Centre Barbers, Tsawwassen personal trainer Cara Thien and a few other local businesses, Passmore is looking for more sponsors to help her out.

Passmore has a website (kianaformissworldcanada. webstarts.com) with contact information and more details on her upcoming events.

Miss World Canada is set to take place May 13 at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond.

The winner gets an "allexpense paid trip to Ordos, China, to compete in the Miss World pageant, as well as scholarships, prizes and leadership opportunities," the Miss World Canada site states.
