Ladner throwback, a changing village

More changes could be on the way

Still standing today, the historic building at the centre of both photos, originally known as the Big Store, reflected the optimistic growth and development of the area prior to World War One. Delta Optimist file

Let’s have a Ladner Village then-and-now look at Delta Street looking toward Chisholm Street.

At the centre of the 1910 photo, and prominent in both photos, is the Lanning, Fawcett & Wilson Ltd. Store.

Built in 1907, it was part of Delta's original town centre.

As far as the future of the area, on Monday council will consider granting a contract for a consultant to come up with options for the redevelopment of the former Seven Seas site and Spot on the Water Park, as well as options to reconfigure Chisholm Street.

One of the suggestions raised at the Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee was that Chisholm Street become a one-way street in order to provide more development area.

Submitting its final report earlier this year, that committee spent a year going over various ideas on how the revitalize the village core and waterfront, discussing concepts by civic staff, hearing what the development community had to say and seeing what other communities have done.
