Large development proposed walking distance from Granville Island

It'll add 100 new units to the neighbourhood

A new development has been proposed for land just a short walk from Granville Island.

The six-storey project would bring 100 new rental residential units to the corner of West Second Avenue and Fir Street, which is currently a parking lot. The lot would be between the residential units on the waterfront and the light industrial neighbourhood on the border of Kitsilano and Fairview.

In an application with the city, proponents of the development explain that 20 per cent of the residential units would be offered at below-market value.

"The project also offers a variety of unit types including 5 studios, 57 one-bedroom apartments, and 38 family-oriented two-bedroom units," states the application.

As the property is an unusual shape (it backs on to the old rail line that runs through the area), the building itself would resemble a capital 'L' coming to a corner at the end of each arm.

"The design concept seeks to embolden the massing with 'ship-like' extended and strutted roof overhangs at the two flatiron corners which fly above the deeper terrace setbacks below," notes the application, adding that porthole-like windows are in the design as well.

Along with the residential units there would be retail and restaurant space at street level.

There's currently a public comment period running until Jan. 27.
