South Delta Secondary School student Pricilla Westlake is hosting the International Youth Day Boundary Bay Beach Clean Up on Friday from noon to 2 p.m.

Westlake was one of 40 students from around B.C. to participate in Get Outside BC - an outdoor leadership program for youth led by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and B.C. Parks.

The 14 to 18-year-olds earned a spot in the program after an application process showcasing their passion for the outdoors. Last month, the teens gathered in Squamish to learn outdoor skills and event planning; and they were left with a task - create a community event that will inspire others to get outside.

The teens will come together again in October in regional groups to discuss their events and future outdoor initiatives in their region.

Westlake says the goals of Friday's event are to: get outside and have some fun; be a part of the solution by collecting trash; and, to act globally.

The event will include food, prizes and giveaways. As well, Westlake says, students in need of service hours can receive a volunteer certificate of appreciation.

Gift bags are available for the first 100 volunteers to register.

Register by e-mailing Westlake at pricilla@dccnet.com.

The clean up starts at noon under the blue tent in the picnic area in front of the pond.
