Even more sidewalks are coming to North Delta.

City council recently approved awarding an $884,386 contract to construct additional concrete sidewalks in areas that still don’t have them.

It’s part of Neighbourhood Livability and Safety Improvements project.

The work includes construction of new 1.5 metre wide concrete sidewalks and LED street lighting to enhance pedestrian safety in the neighbourhood between 116A and 117 Streets, from 80A Avenue to 82 Avenue.

The new sidewalks will be installed adjacent to the existing curbs and will tie into existing sidewalks where possible.

It is part of a series of sidewalk projects eyed for the North community after council earlier this year conveyed concern about the state of its sidewalk network.

Council this year also endorsed implementing a “Slow Streets” pilot program in the area bounded by 116th Street to the west, 118th Street to the east, 80th Avenue to the south, and 82nd Avenue to the north.

In an effort to further reduce speeds, the program will involve 30 km/h speed limit signs at the two entrances to the neighbourhood, supplemented with the installation of speed humps.

Installing new sidewalks where none exist is also part of the pedestrian safety plan.
