North Delta Crime Beat: Nephew scam targets victim for more than $25,000

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. *Jan. 25, NDP 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported they had been contacted by someone pretending to be their nephew advising that they needed money for legal fees due to a car accident. Over the course of several months the complainant made several transfers of funds for a total of $25,000. The complainant was unable to provide police with any details. The complainant was advised to notify their bank with information of the fraudulent activity and provide police with details of the activity in order for the police to proceed with an investigation. 

*Jan. 25, 7100 Block of 120th Street: While police were in a business investigating a theft, they observed a vehicle stunt driving and speeding on the road. Police pursued the vehicle and a traffic stop was initiated. When asked about his driving behaviour, the driver indicated they had just been at the gym and wanted to get home. The vehicle was impounded for seven days for stunt driving and a violation ticket was issued for driving without due care. A friend transported the driver and passengers from the area with all parties being cooperative with police.

*Jan. 27, 7200 Block of 112th Street: Complainant reported a male entered their property, walked onto the patio, and stole a bottle of wine and a chicken from the fridge.  Police attended and were provided with surveillance video. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 6’ tall, medium build, wearing a dark puffy jacket, black pants, and carrying a backpack. Police discussed theft preventative measures with complainant. Photos of the suspect disseminated for possible identification.

*Jan. 28, 11000 Block of River Road: Complainant reported that they believed their vehicle, stolen from Penticton, was now parked in a local driveway. Police queried the vehicle and determined it was in fact the stolen vehicle. Vehicle towed from the scene and information sent to Penticton RCMP. The property representative of the River Road address advised and provided with a police file number.

*Jan. 28, 900 Block of Highway 91: A vehicle, travelling over the bridge at 147 km/h in an 80 km/h zone was stopped by police in a safe pull-out at the bottom of the bridge. The driver was charged with driving at an excessive speed. The vehicle was impounded and the driver left the scene in an arranged ride. 

*Jan. 30, 6400 Block of 120th Street: Police received a report of a theft in progress at the liquor store. Two men entered the store and stole two bottles of liquor and attempted to leave by cab. Police attended and located the taxi with the two men in the back seat, in possession of the stolen liquor. Both men were arrested and released and will be required to appear in court on a future date.
