Online poll: More Optimist readers heading to Point Roberts for cheap gas

Gas projected to hit $1.85 per litre in Metro Vancouver this spring
Point Roberts border crossing

The recent surge in Metro Vancouver gas prices has more Optimist readers thinking about those short cross-border trip to Point Roberts again.

In our online poll that ran from Jan 12-19, we asked readers “With gas topping $1.70 a litre over the weekend and projected to hit $1.85 by spring, will you be going to Point Roberts again to fuel up?”

Of the 416 responses, 41 percent opted for “Yes, it's reached the point where making those short trips for gas make sense again.” That’s on top of another 15 percent that said they were already heading across the line for cheaper gas once the restrictions were lifted.

Still, there was a still a significant level of reluctance to resume those weekly short trips, whether it’s the pandemic still being prominent or Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) rules coming back that include being selected for a random at-home test.

The option of “No, I'm l still hesitant about crossing the border during the pandemic and filling out the required information when I return” was selected by 44 percent of our readers, including 54 percent among the local participants.

Results are based on an online study of adult Delta Optimist readers that are located in Ladner. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 4.76%, 19 times out of 20.
