Delta council gave special recognition to a pair of departing members Monday night.

The meeting in North Delta was the last for councillors Heather King and Anne Peterson, who both lost in the recent municipal election.

King had vacated her council seat to take run at the mayor's job, finishing third in that race. Peterson ran for re-election for council, finishing in seventh place.

Both councillors, who were first elected three years ago and served one term, were given a glass figure by Mayor Lois Jackson and said a few farewell words.

Saying it was a pleasure and an honour to serve on council, King wished her colleagues the best of luck.

"I have an opportunity to sit and watch how the next three years are going to unfold and there's an awful lot on the plate for the people who are going to be serving at this table," said King.

"You will have the Southlands, the North Delta Area Plan and many other things that will involve a lot of difficulty in terms of decision making, public consultation... I wish you all the best," she said.

King also thanked staff as well as the community for its interest and involvement.

Saying she's a person of few words, Peterson said she started on her path to council 10 years ago while serving on a planning committee, not realizing where it would lead.

"It led to council, a lot of hard work. It led to a lot of hard work that doesn't get seen by the public, not headline grabbers. I don't think people really truly understand how many committees we sit on, how many hours of work we put into different ideas and projects."

Peterson said she'd like to see someone on the new council take up heritage and seniors' causes.

Newcomer Sylvia Bishop will join council, as well as Jeannie Kanakos, who returns after leaving in 2008 after one term.

Incumbents Ian Paton, Bruce McDonald, Scott Hamilton and Robert Campbell were re-elected to council. Jackson won a fifth term as mayor.

The inaugural meeting of the new council takes place Dec. 5.
