Protected bike lanes will be coming to Tilbury’s River Road – specifically between 68 St. and 72 St. – as an investment into improved, safer cycling infrastructure.

The City of Delta’s engineering department brought forth an explanatory report on the $604,622 project to council during their Jan. 10 meeting, which detailed plans to widen the roadway, place barriers along River Road and to add new signage and pavement markings.

Following a brief discussion initiated by Coun. Dan Copeland on the potentially hazardous, unruly foliage along that stretch of road, Director of Engineering Steven Lan assured council that if the road widening didn’t take care of it, that they would, indeed, clear the foliage.

Council approved awarding GPM Civil Contracting with a $527,377 (plus applicable taxes) contract to take on the project, as any contract awards greater than $50,000 require council approval.

Delta’s 2022 budget draft has allotted a total of $1,608,500 for cycle infrastructure, with $658,500 of that being funding from TransLink, reads a Delta staff report.
