Victim of phone scam alerts police

Powell River RCMP detachment.

Just before noon on Monday, May 9, Powell River RCMP received a call from a person advising they had been the victim of a phone scam.

The victim advised she had received a call from a subject claiming to be from Telus and was offering a new promotion. The victim ended up giving the caller her credit card number and her driver licence information.

Once she hung up she had someone contact Telus, who advised there was no such promotion going on and the caller was not an employee. The victim contacted her bank to advise them of the incident and also contacted Equifax to report the matter.

Police are again encouraging everyone to be vigilant when receiving unsolicited calls. If you didn’t initiate the call, do not give out any personal or credit card information. If you think you have fallen victim to a scam and have given out banking information, immediately call your bank and advise the credit reporting agencies.
