Residents on a Ladner street want measures taken to address parking concerns in their growing neighbourhood

A memo to council from the engineering department notes a petition was received from residents of Woodward Landing, a strata community at 5300 Admiral Way, regarding excessive trades vehicles parked along Admiral Way.

The 55-name petition came from 38 separate properties.

“During the week, residents are fighting for spots with the construction workers, marina boaters, cyclists and pedestrians leaving their vehicles for the Millennium Trail. They are also competing with the overflow of vehicles with boat trailers when the Ferry Road Boat Launch is full. The boat launch is at the north end of Ferry Road and at the west end of Admiral Way. With the development of Hampton Cove, we have lost considerable street parking. Looking ahead, as construction for the future development progresses, parking is going to be impossible for residents. Trades and service people are finding it more difficult to accommodate us,” the petition states.

The petition requests that the south side of their block be designated resident-only parking from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The engineering department notes staff have contacted Polygon Homes, the developer for Marina Gardens, and their representatives have advised that there is on-site parking for trades’ vehicles

Polygon has indicated that they will be reminding contractors to use that on-site parking instead of the street.

The memo also notes parking surveys were conducted on weekdays at various times of the day, which showed that majority of on-street parking fronting Woodward Landing was available.

However, the survey did indicate heavy utilization of on-street parking was most apparent along Admiral Way east of Admiral Boulevard, resulting in vehicles also parking in the roundabout at the eastern end of the street, which was found to be impeding emergency vehicle access.

No stopping signage will be installed around that roundabout.

“The utilization of on-street parking is anticipated to continue to increase as Marina Gardens develops, visitors come to the area to utilize the Millennium Trail and boats continue to use the Ferry Road Boat Launch. Staff will continue to monitor the on-street parking utilization and whether any time restrictions would be required to ensure greater availability of parking spots. Staff have followed up with the petition organizer to advise of the steps that have been taken to address their concerns regarding trades parking,” the memo adds.
