South Delta comes through for annual Toy Depot

The community stepped up once again to help out the Deltassist Toy Depot this holiday season.

The community stepped up once again to help out the Deltassist Toy Depot this holiday season.

Clients were able to pick up toys, which were donated to Deltassist, a non-profit social services organization, at the three-day event held at the East Delta Hall earlier this month.

"The response from the community, as always, with donations was wonderful," said Deltassist community services co-ordinator Carly Geistlinger.

Approximately 800 kids received Christmas presents from the Toy Depot. That's an increase of about 100 from last year.

"It's a harder year for the community, I would say, but at the same time, the donors have come through as always and we were able to meet the needs of the families," said Geistlinger.

She added that a call put out for more donations for teens was met, which was great to see.

About 60 volunteers helped run the Toy Depot. Volunteers help set up, check people in and assist clients browse through the toys.

"We're very, very lucky with our volunteers. A lot of them come back year after year," said Geistlinger. "They really help set the tone of the toy depot and help put clients at ease when they're coming through."

A few longtime volunteers have been involved with the Toy Depot for over 20 years, she noted.
