South Delta Crime Beat: Merritt man tracks stolen vehicle to BC Ferry terminal

*April 19, 5000 Block 2A Avenue: Complainant reported the theft of the catalytic converter from their vehicle that was parked in the driveway of the residence. When the vehicle was started, complainant reports the vehicle was very loud and they had it towed to a local shop who confirmed that the catalytic converter was cut off.  No witnesses or CCTV surveillance footage available.

*April 22, 5000 Block Canoe Pass Way: Security officer reported observing an unknown female suspect stealing clothing items from a local business. Police attended and located the female suspect with items bundled in her jacket. The items were recovered and returned to the business.

*April 22, HQ 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported their stolen truck from Merritt was mapping via GPS to the BC Ferries Terminal. Police confirmed stolen status as well as identifying descriptors. Area patrols proved negative; however, some sailings had recently departed. Complainant’s updated GPS status was showing vehicle over open water, BC Ferries staff advised the unoccupied vehicle was located on board, sailing to Swartz Bay. Information sent to Sidney RCMP to continue the investigation.

*April 22, 5000 Block Canoe Pass Way: Complainant reported the theft of $420 worth of goods from a local business by an unknown male wearing a hat and a face mask. Extensive CCTV footage shows the concealment of the goods in a black umbrella. The vehicle associated with the suspect was a grey Acura MDX. The stolen items were not recovered.

*April 23, 4900 Block Canoe Pass Way: Complainants reported an unknown male was seen leaving two local businesses with approximately $2,800 worth of unpaid merchandise.  Police attended, located and identified a blue Honda CRV associated with the unknown male suspect. The vehicle was searched with the consent of the driver, stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to both businesses. The suspect arrested and released with a future court date.

*April 19, 5400 Block 48A Avenue: Complainant reported damage to their vehicle side mirror, after parking near a walkway overnight. No other damage seen on vehicle. Area canvas for CCTV footage was negative.

*April 22, HQ 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported attempted extortion after sending revealing photos to unknown female who threatened to share photos with complainant’s social media friends’ group. Complainant blocked the unknown female from all their social media accounts. Police provided advice on how to be safe on the internet, and a link to “Take it down” website that is operated by the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.

*April 22, 5200 Block Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported an unknown male had concealed items worth approximately $350, then left the business without paying. Complainant detained unknown suspect outside of the business. Police obtained a statement from complainant and after reviewing CCTV footage, identified the suspect who was found to be breaching a condition and was transported to cells. The stolen merchandise was returned to the business.
