Dr. Paul Dhillon, a South Delta Secondary grad, is one of 15 recipients for a 2017 Canadian Medical Association Award.

Dhillon is being presented with the Young Leaders Award, the second time he has received the honour. He was first presented with it in 2013. The award celebrates the efforts of young physician leaders of tomorrow for their efforts today.

Dhillon graduated from SDSS in 1999 as a valedictorian.

A political science graduate of UBC, he studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and graduated in 2009. The following year he earned a diploma from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, United Kingdom, and an International Red Cross certificate in health emergencies in large populations at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

His professional credentials are as impressive as his academic ones.

The list includes editing a book - The Surprising Lives of Small-Town Doctors - and donating all the proceeds to charity. He served as a medical officer in the Canadian Armed Forces and as the senior medical authority for Ex Arctic Ram and Ex Arctic Bison.

He has also worked in Sierra Leone in an Ebola hospital with Save the Children.

Dhillon - a full-service general practitioner in rural Saskatchewan - is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Saskatchewan.

He is also co-founder of The Review Course in Family Medicine, which helps residents and international medical graduates prepare for their certification exam in family medicine.

On the leadership front, he has served as president of the Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Saskatchewan.

This year's Canadian Medical Association awards will be handed out on Aug. 29 in Quebec City.
