South Delta to hold private Remembrance Day ceremonies again this year

The legions are determined to keep everyone as safe as possible

It’s going to be another year of low-key, private Remembrance Day ceremonies in South Delta this year for the Ladner and Tsawwassen legions.

Tsawwassen members will be holding their own ceremony within their legion, says president Ken Harvey, and they won’t be joining the Ladner Legion to march to the cenotaph as they normally would have.

“It’s better than last year because we couldn’t have anything, so this is an improvement, but it is still disappointing,” said Harvey. “Normally we have that big parade from Ladner to Memorial Park where the cenotaph is, and there’s all the Scouts and Sparks – all the little ones ... and this year, of course, we don’t have all those kiddies.”

Ladner’s ceremony will be closed to the public again this year.

The Legion will be forming a scaled-down parade starting on 48th Ave. and Delta St. that will include a few veterans, their colour party, the Delta Police Pipe Band and some dignitaries.

They are discouraging the public from joining them.

“We hope people understand that we’re doing this still for everybody’s safety – that’s our main concern, is to keep people safe,” says Jacky Hillairet, manager of the Ladner Legion.

“It’s all for the veterans, the whole day is about veterans, so as long as we can have a couple of veterans out there and pay tribute to them, then bring them back [to the Legion] for some sandwiches and soup and make them feel special, then we’ve done our job,” she adds.
