Southpointe is tops again in Report Card

Private school ranked the highest

Private schools once again topped the Fraser Institute's annual, and controversial, high school rankings.

Delta was no exception in the Report Card on Secondary Schools in British Columbia and Yukon 2012, which rated 280 public and independent secondary schools based on several indicators, using data from province-wide exams administered by the B.C. Ministry of Education.

Southpointe Academy, a private school in Tsawwassen, was the highest rated Delta school in a tie for 19th place.

The next Delta high school on the latest rankings was South Delta in 73rd spot, followed by Delta and Seaquam (tied for 86th), Sands (108th), Delview (148th) and North Delta (242nd).

The report card displays individual school results for the past five years, showing whether schools have improved or fallen behind over time. It also includes information about each school's make up, including parent income, percentage of ESL students and percentage of special needs students.

When comparing school performance, it's important to consider all factors that affect learning, which is why the Report Card offers demographic data in addition to exam results, said Peter Cowley, the Fraser Institute's director of school performance studies.

Earlier this year, the Fraser Institute released its annual rankings of B.C. elementary schools, which saw Southpointe share top spot overall. No Delta public school cracked the top 100.

. In other school news, according to the Delta school district's latest Achievement Contract, submitted to the Ministry of Education annually, over the past eight years Delta's average six-year high school completion rate has been 87 per cent, compared to the provincial average of 79 per cent.
