The Corporation of Delta is warning Beach Grove and Boundary Bay residents of the possibility of storm surge flooding over the next few days.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning for the western Fraser Valley Thursday afternoon with further significant winds expected on Saturday and Sunday. Wind speeds of 60 km/h are anticipated with gusts up to 90 km/h.

Emergency operations staff and Delta crews are prepared and on alert. Delta CAO George Harvie said Delta's Emergency Operations Centre at municipal hall has been activated and will continue to function 24/7 throughout the alert.

Harvie and Mayor Lois Jackson went to Boundary Bay Thursday afternoon to see the situation firsthand.

Jackson said the emergency situation is going to be on high until at least Sunday.

Harvie said conditions will be monitored throughout the weekend and additional advisories will be issued as required. Civic readerboards and the municipal website will carry updates.

Harvie told the Optimist it's not just the beach areas being monitored as there's a concern about trees in North Delta and the dikes on Westham Island.
