The following column was submitted to PrinceGeorgeMatters from Todd Corrigall, Chief Executive Officer of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce.

There is no denying that 2020 presented unparalleled challenges for our community.

From businesses being burdened with additional precautions and costs, to the need to develop, very quickly, opportunities to ensure those people at risk or immuno-compromised could still patronize local establishments – it was a situation that you just don’t plan for as an entrepreneur.

With the above challenges being presented, we saw our business community pivot like never before.

Posting their products and services on social media and SupportPG, developing curbside service, delivery opportunities and hampers with all the essentials.

It was truly impressive to watch our small business community come together and show their resolve.

So, with 2020 slowly moving to the rear view, what can we expect in 2021?

Honestly, a little more of the same with a huge light at the end of a long tunnel.

The message has been clear that it will be the beginning of autumn before those who wish to receive the vaccine will have received it.

So, the belief is that mask-wearing, social distancing and smaller groups will remain in place for much of the first two quarters of 2021.

However, there are some fairly significant shifts that will occur.

As consumers and community members, we have a duty to support the businesses that have supported us.

From sponsoring your sports teams, festival and events, to providing valuable local experiences, opportunities and employment – they truly are the backbone of our economy and the lifeblood of our community.

So, how do we make sure 2021 presents strong opportunities to ensure a vibrant small business scene in Prince George?

A simple question with a not-so-simple answer:

  1. WE need to lobby local government to license outdoor spaces for more vendors, restaurants and pubs. This isn’t an every day thing, but something we can do to provide a greater sense of community and belonging while safely being outdoors and supporting local;
  2. WE need to lobby all three levels of government to help the battle to regain our streets from the challenges presented by mental health, addictions and violence;
  3. WE need to keep the pressure on all three levels of government to develop and disburse programs that assist those impacted by COVID19. These solutions should not be politicized and should be established and released with the speed and expediency they deserve;
  4. WE need to shop local!

The most important thing to remember as we head into 2021 is that WE will make next year different.

Our power to change situations lies in the decisions we make every day to keep one another safe and support local business.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire Prince George Chamber of Commerce Team, we wish you a fantastic Holiday and Happy New Year.
