Throwback: Big plans for new boss at Ladner Hotel

Now long gone, the hotel would go through several more owners over the subsequent decades

Let’s go back to November 1971 when new owners took over the Ladner Hotel at the corner of Delta and Bridge streets.

The hotel was purchased by Syd Roitman, Barry Roitman and associates.

They appointed Wilmer Cox, who had extensive experience in hotel management, as assistant manager.

Syd Roitman had bought and sold interests in a number of B.C. hotels, including the Drake in Vancouver.

He would go on to undertake a “ultra-modern” facelift with “dazzling” renovations at the Ladner Hotel.

The changes, which included a new cabaret, cost Roitman $210,000.

Roitman told the Delta Optimist the business was “a working class hotel” and its prices would reflect that fact.

“No expense has been spared,” he said. “And while we have an exciting and modern facility, we want this to be a quality place for the ordinary working people of Delta.”

The hotel was purchased by Fred Leippi and Joe Clive in the mid-1970s.
