The Tsawwassen First Nation has announced that its Executive Council on Thursday, Aug. 11 appointed Valerie Cross (Coun. Chemkwaat) as acting Chief.

She will fill the role left vacant following the recent passing of Chief Ken Baird.

The TFN Government notes Cross will serve in the role for the remainder of the current term, which will end 10 days after the upcoming general election on Oct. 15.

“During this period Executive Council members will be working together to support Councillor Cross and to share some of the responsibilities of the office of Chief, including representing Tsawwassen First Nation at the regional, provincial and national level,” the TFN noted in a statement.

“Our hands go up to Councillor Cross and the other members of Executive Council for jointly accepting this role to serve and support the community during this challenging time.”

The TFN also noted that with Cross’ transition to her new role, there is a vacancy on the Executive Council. The council will work with legislators to fill the vacancy, and an update will be issued to TFN members when the vacancy has been filled.

“Members who may have questions or concerns are always welcome to contact Executive Council and/or Tsawwassen Government staff for more information. We appreciate everyone’s support and patience as we navigate through this challenging period. Tsawwassen is a strong community and we will get through this time as we always do, together,” the TFN added.
