Delta firefighters were called out late Tuesday night to the second house fire in Ladner in less than a week.
Deputy fire chief Ken Sim said firefighters were called to the residence in the 4600-block of 88 Street in the east end of Ladner just before midnight.
All occupants of the home made it out safely. However, two people were taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, said Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks. There were also four dogs in the house and, unfortunately, two perished in the fire, Sim said.
The deputy fire chief said the blaze was contained to one side of the duplex-type dwelling.
The damage to the home is extensive, Sim said. The cause of the fire is currently still under investigation, but is not believed to be suspicious. Sim said work had been done on the house recently.
The fire is the second in the Ladner area this week.
On Sunday night, a house in the 5100-block of 45 Avenue suffered extensive damage in a fire.
Sim said he could not comment on the cause of that fire but it is not suspicious.
