Angels fourth in Burnaby

Strong playoff round propels team to best ever local finish at Provincial Mite Girls Softball Championships

South Delta has produced its best finish to date at the Provincial Mite Girls Softball Championships.

The South Delta Angels put together a strong playoff round to place fourth in the 17-team event, held over the Canada Day Weekend at Squint Lake Park in Burnaby.

After two days of roundrobin action, the Angels earned the sixth seed for the "A" pool playoffs.

The locals made some early noise with a superb effort to knock off third seed Port Coquitlam in their opening game. Next was top ranked Ridge Meadows, and although the girls fought hard, the end result was a 9-2 loss.

The Angels then closed out the championships looking for a spot on the podium against South Surrey/White Rock. The entertaining battle saw the locals just fall short in a 9-8 loss.

The Angels' coaches and supporters were thrilled to watch the players' steady progress throughout the season. Fourth in the provincial is an accomplishment the whole team should be proud of. The achievement came from a team that didn't have the advantage of playing together during regular season but jelled in a few short weeks to achieve big.

South Delta's success came from the powerful pitchers, hard-working catchers, great hitting and solid defensive plays from the whole team. The roster includes: Shaelyn Claybo, Bree Gallagher, Olivia Malesku, Michaela Hayes, Taylor Mercredi, Dannica Desgroseillier, Mackenzie Last, Megan Hendrickson, Marika Lyszczyk, Sian Mathura, Hanna Hansen, Kathleen Atichson, and Sophia Janzen.

The team is coached by Neil Malesku, Scott Hendrickson, Scott Last, Tammy Hansen and Katie Hikida (pitching coach).

The girls did leave the tournament with some hardware as they earned the title as the fastest team in B.C. by winning the base race competition.
