The Delta Deas Rowing Club had an amazing showing at the Head of the Charles.
The Head of the Charles is one of the most prestigious races in the rowing calendar and is generally the largest regatta in the world, attracting more than 11,000 competitors. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, things were different this year, however.
The regatta was held virtually, which meant that clubs rowed the race on home waters and posted their results. For DDRC this meant rowing more than 4.7 km from the top of the reach, down through Ladner Village and all the way to the Wellington pier.
The club posted some amazing results.
Charmaine Hermannand Stephanie Payne came in first in the women’s 40-plus doubles with a blistering time. Jeremy Hankin, who is a relatively new rower, came in seventh in the men’s 30-plus. Richard Stout and Gayle Hubbard came in first in mixed doubles with Stuart and Jane McCall right behind in second. A number of other crews also posted top 10 finishes.
“After seven months of no racing it was good to get back on the course and show what we can do,” remarked McCall.
