The Delta Islanders opened the B.C. Junior B Tier One Lacrosse League season on the weekend by splitting a pair of games.

Turner Anderson and Rylan Weisbrod each scored four goals to lead the Islanders to a 15-7 road win over the Maple Ridge Burrards on Friday night at Cam Neely Arena. Nico Medd also had a big outing with six points, including a hat trick as the visitors raced out to a 5-1 lead after 20 minutes and poured in seven more goals in the third period.

Brady Mckay had a goal and three assists. Other goal scorers included Dryden Murrell, B. Eckhart and Clayton Read. Noah Dibattista turned aside 23 shots.

The Islanders then hosted the Victoria Shamrocks in their 2023 home opener on Sunday afternoon at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

Coming off a 17-3 drubbing of the Richmond Roadrunners 24 hours earlier, last year’s playoff finalist, pulled away in the final period by outscoring Delta 9-0 enroute to a 20-6 win.

It was 5-0 by the midway marking of the first when the Islanders battled back on goals by Medd, Adam Hoegg and Carter McIntyre to trail 6-3 after 20 minutes. Anderson, Aiden Currivan and Medd added second period goals.

Head coach Nathan Wilson’s squad travels to New West on Friday night to take on the Salmonbellies and returns to Ladner for another Sunday matinee (1:30 p.m.), this time against the Nanaimo Timbermen.
