Two disc golf events have made their way onto this year's Tsawwassen Sun Festival schedule.

First up is a Frisbee golf tournament tomorrow at the disc golf course at Winskill Park.

"This is something that is active and outside and it's [in] your own back yard," says Winskill Toddler Park Association president Rob Cowie.

The Winskill Toddler Park Association and the TTown Disc Golf Club are teaming up to host the tourney. Cowie says the aim is to raise awareness about the disc golf course at Winskill and to raise money for a new rope tower at the park's toddler playground.

While professional and amateur players from around the Lower Mainland have been invited to take part in the tournament, firsttimers are also welcome to play.

Organizers will attempt to pair up the novices with a professional to provide some guidance during the tournament, Cowie notes. Prizes will be handed out for the top players in all divisions.

Disc golf, a game like golf but with a disc or Frisbee instead of a ball and clubs, is very social, says Cowie.

"It's a great way to be active and outdoors," he notes, adding the game involves a lot of skill.

"The sport was formalized in the 1970s, and shares with 'ball golf' the object of completing each hole in the fewest number of strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest number of throws)," according to the Professional Disc Golf Association website. "A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is the 'hole.'"

The toddler playground at Winskill was dedicated to Cowie's late daughter Rhiannon, who passed away from cancer in 2002 when she was two.

The association, along with the assistance of the Mitchell Odyssey Foundation, Safeway and the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, were responsible for the fundraising and building of the playground and swings located at the ball diamonds at Winskill.

A rope tower would be a more challenging piece of equipment for older kids to have fun on at the playground.

The association is just getting started fundraising for the rope tower, a project that's expected to cost around $30,000.

Registration starts at 9: 30 a.m. and the tourney is expected to get started by 10 a.m.

The tournament costs $10 for novices and $15 for amateurs (18 years and up).

The second event takes place Monday as the Winskill Toddler Park Association and Scotiabank are sponsoring a "Family Frisbee Golf Day" at the disc golf course. For a donation, families can grab a Frisbee and play a round of disc golf. That gets started at 10 a.m.
