Some stingy defensive play has the Greater Vancouver Canadians off to an impressive start in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League.

Some stingy defensive play has the Greater Vancouver Canadians off to an impressive start in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League.

The Canadians swept a pair of games from the North Island Silvertips last week and take a league best 3-1 record into this weekend's series with the Thompson Blazers. The opening game takes place at 11: 15 a.m. on Saturday and the teams will also meet again on Sunday at 11: 30 a.m. Both take place at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

After opening the regular season with a split against the Okanagan Rockets in Kelowna, the Canadians battled North Island as part of the league's opening weekend at the UBC Thunderbird Winter Sports Centre.

In the series opener, a goal from South Delta's Michael Olson-Eyre with just 2: 32 remaining, lifted Greater Vancouver to a 2-1 victory. Another local product, Troy Sutherland, had the other goal, while Chris Tai was solid between the pipes.

The weekend finale was another tight affair as a pair of third period goals by Vancouver's Cody Gordon provided the difference in a 3-1 triumph. The Canadians received more stellar netminding, this time from South Delta's Nathan Alalouf. Seafair alumni Alec Dawydiak had the other goal.
