Vancouver Giants standout and Cranbrook native Bowen Byram has been named an alternate captain for Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships that get underway on Boxing Day.

Vancouver Giants standout blueliner Bowen Byram has been named an alternate captain for Team Canada at the upcoming 2021 World Junior Hockey Championships.

The 19-year-old Cranbrook native is among Canada’s key returning players. He was drafted fourth overall by the Colorado Avalanche at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft that took place at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. He is a good bet to crack the Avalanche’s roster for the upcoming NHL season after three stellar campaigns with the Giants.

“On behalf of the Vancouver Giants organization I would like to congratulate Bowen for being named to the leadership group for Canada’s World Junior team,” said Giants GM Barclay Parneta. “His experiences at last year’s tournament, along with spending time in the NHL playoff bubble will be invaluable to help with this year’s efforts to repeat as champions.”

Canada is scheduled to take the ice for their first pre-tournament exhibition game on Monday, (3 p.m.) against Sweden. Then on Wednesday they’ll battle Russia, also at  3 p.m. Canada’s first round-robin tournament game will take place on Boxing Day against Germany.
