Islanders open with wins in Victoria and Burnaby

It wasn't complete domination but it was enough for the Delta Islanders to open the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League season with a pair of road wins on the weekend.

It wasn't complete domination but it was enough for the Delta Islanders to open the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League season with a pair of road wins on the weekend.

Despite being out-scored by a combined 15-5 margin in the final period, the Islanders managed an 18-16 win in Victoria Saturday and a 13-12 overtime victory at Burnaby one night later.

Delta looked to be in cruise control in the provincial capital until the hosts exploded for six unanswered goals in the final 2:53 of the game.

It was a similar script in Burnaby as the Lakers erased a 9-4 deficit after 40 minutes to force overtime and actually enjoyed an 11-10 lead until intermediate call-up Liam McDonald ignited a three-goal Delta rally.

Tre Leclaire had a huge weekend with 18 points. The league's 2015 rookie-of-the-year had four goals and seven assists in Victoria and two goals and nine helpers against the Lakers.

Local product Evan Messenger is also off to a blazing start with 14 points, including a hat trick and eight points in the opener.

Rookie Riley Taylor added seven points.

The Islanders visit defending champion Coquitlam tonight. Veteran goaltender Ryland Hood is expected to make his season debut.
