An early season four-game road swing may not seem so significant unless it happens to be just a 14-game B.C. Junior "A" Lacrosse League schedule.

That's where the Delta Islanders find themselves, beginning Friday night in Port Coquitlam, where they will look to improve on a 1-2 record after splitting a pair of games against Vancouver Island teams last weekend.

Delta picked up its first win of the season by holding off the hometown Nanaimo Timbermen 13-12 last Saturday. Cameron Squarek’s second of the period with 7:37 remaining proved to be the game winner.

Silas Richmond and Keegan Kozack led the Islanders with six points each, including hat tricks. Ben McDonald also scored three times. Kade Hoogstraten rounded out the scoring. Braeden Washington made 35 saves for the win.

Twenty-four hours later, the Victoria Shamrocks visited the Ladner Leisure Centre for what was the debut of Islanders’ captain Mitch Sandberg who is back home from his sophomore field lacrosse season at Ohio State University.

Sandberg’s first period goal briefly tied the game at 3-3 before the Shamrocks closed out the opening period with five unanswered goals and never looked back in a 14-7 victory.

The visitors did much of their damage in transition, led by Kyle Pepper with four goals. McDonald had another hat trick to lead the Islanders. Richmond chipped in with a pair.

After taking on the Saints, Delta heads to historic Queen’s Park Arena on Tuesday to face the New West Salmonbellies.

The next home game is June 11 when the Saints visit Ladner at 7 p.m.
