An open house and information session for the new Delta Basketball Academy will take place on Monday 7 p.m. at Delta Manor Education Centre in Ladner.
The academy is a not-for-profit initiative between the Delta School Board, Basketball B.C. and Split Second Basketball. The training sessions will take place at the Richmond Olympic Oval with transportation provided from each of the seven secondary schools in the city. The program will launch for the 2019-20 school year and is expected to cost $325 monthly.
With established academies in other sports, including baseball, golf, soccer, lacrosse and softball, this is the first time basketball has been offered. A neutral site location is required due to lack of available gym time during weekday hours and ensures academy students are eligible to still play for their school teams under B.C. School Sports rules.
“This is an amazing experience for students to learn basketball in a world class facility while still earning credits,” said district vice-principal Paige Hansen. “We are very excited to be offering this not-for-profit program.”
