The Richmond champions are standing in the way of the South Delta Sun Devils securing a 19th straight trip to the B.C. AAA Girls Soccer Championships.

The Sun Devils and the McMath Wildcats will square off on Monday (3 p.m.) at Winskill Park in the South Fraser AAA Championships semi-finals. The winner will advance directly to Thursday’s title game and secure a B.C. berth. The loser will have to battles it way back through the consolation side of the draw with a win required on Wednesday in the double knockout tournament that offers four provincial berths in total.

The No. 2 seed Devils opened the playoffs with a convincing 7-0 victory over Salish on Wednesday. While No. 3 McMath got past Panaroma Ridge. Adding some intrigue to the match-up is the Wildcats being somewhat of an unknown opponent having played exclusively against Richmond teams in the regular season. Longtime SDSS co-coach Stephen Burns also spent some time coaching the Steveston school where his daughter attended.

The Delta Pacers’ bid to enter the main draw of the South Fraser playoffs ended with a narrow 3-2 play-in game loss to Matheson on Monday. The Ladner school enjoyed its best season in recent memory, finishing league play with a 3-3-1 record.
