A former Beach Grove junior golf standout will be teeing off in the coming weeks for the opportunity to participate in one of golf’s majors.

A 1-under 71 secured John Morrow one of four spots up for grabs at Tuesday’s (April 25) US Open local qualifying at the Loomis Trail Golf Course in Blaine, WA.

The 22-year-old South Delta Secondary graduate now advances to the final-stage qualifying (sectionals) that will take place at 13 sites, from May 16 to June 5, with each offering a specific number of spots for the 123rd U.S. Open, slated for June 15 to 18 at the Los Angeles Country Club.

Morrow is in his senior year at Seattle University after transferring from UVic where he enjoyed an impressive stint, including earning NAIA Second Team All-American status. The Red Hawks are in Nevada this weekend for the Western Athletic Conference Championship.

His round at Loomis Trail included a 2-under on the back nine thanks to three birdies to finish one back of Seattle’s Taehoon Song, a junior at the University of Washington.

US Open local qualifying featured a record 10,187 entries at 109 sites in 44 U.S. states and Canada.

Those players who advanced out of local qualifying will join a group of exempt players in final qualifying, which will be conducted over 36 holes.
