Council candidate Chen Du says people have been coming to his defence saying Delta is a community that promotes diversity, inclusiveness and multiculturalism.

Delta is a community that stands up against intolerance and racism.

That’s what council candidate Chen Dun proudly proclaimed following a racist attack by someone who posted on his Facebook campaign page yesterday.

The comments which included “South Asians and Chinese have ruined the Lower Mainland” and “Delta doesn’t need to become another Richmond” was screen shot by a concerned Facebook user and shared to other pages including the North Delta Community Corner.

The reaction was swift, firm and overwhelming as people commented how such an attitude is deplorable, having no place in a society that values inclusion.

Du, who moved to Canada a dozen years ago and has lived in Delta for the last eight, told the Optimist he was heartened to see so much rapid support and how Deltans stand up for what’s right.

“It really warmed my heart to see how members of our community came out on this issue. Afterward, people sent me messages including people who said they were also immigrants. They said the reason they chose Delta as their home is because they know this is a community that promotes diversity, inclusiveness and multiculturalism. I’m really pleased so many came out to stand up against this kind of racist rant,” he said.

An independent, Du is one of 20 running for a councillor seat in this Saturday’s election.
