Delta school board members offered thanks to fellow trustee Fabian Milat last Tuesday at what was his final meeting.

Among those offering accolades was Dale Saip, the longest tenured trustee, who described his early dealings with Milat as “aggravating.” Saip said he eventually came to respect his tenacity and how he grew as a trustee, adding that Milat made him a better trustee in the process.

A smiling Milat thanked his fellow trustees for the kind words, saying he’s proud of what the board has been able to accomplish and is confident the new board will do a great job.

Prior to the election campaign, the five-term trustee announced he wouldn’t be seeking re-election.

The 42-year-old was first elected in 2002 after two unsuccessful attempts.

Board chair Laura Dixon let Milat use the gavel for the first time to close out Tuesday’s meeting.

Other than Milat, all other trustees are running in the Oct. 20 election. They will be joined by 11 newcomers on a ballot that has a total of 17 candidates.
