Candidates can begin filing their nomination papers today to contest next month’s civic election in Delta. The nomination period ends at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14.

Voters will be selecting a mayor, six council members and seven school trustees in the Oct. 20 election.

Many candidates have already announced their intention to run, including three for mayor, 14 for council and 10 for school trustee.

With Mayor Lois Jackson retiring after 19 years in office, three hopefuls are looking to replace her: Coun. Sylvia Bishop, former police chief Jim Cessford and former city manager George Harvie.

The council candidates come mainly from three slates. Bishop’s Team Delta includes incumbent Robert Campbell as well as newcomers Joan Hansen, Kim Kendall and Simran Walia. Cessford’s Independents Working for You slate features incumbents Jeannie Kanakos and Bruce McDonald along with Sandeep Pandher and Garry Shearer. Harvie’s Achieving for Delta slate has Dan Copeland, Param Grewal, Alicia Guichon, Dylan Kruger and Cal Traversy.

Darcy Green is the lone independent in the council race.

In the school trustee race, incumbents Laura Dixon and Nick Kanakos, along with newcomer Joe Muego, are part of the Independents Working for You slate. Incumbent Bruce Reid is joined by Randy Anderson-Fennell and Victor Espinoza on the Kids Matter slate, while incumbent Rhiannon Bennett is running with Andrea Hilder and Mita Naidu on the Delta Voices slate. Incumbent Val Windsor is running as an independent.

Advance polls will be held on Oct. 6, 10 and 11.
