Mitchell 5th, Genest 10th in keirin at world track cycling championship

ROUBAIX, France — Canadian Kelsey Mitchell came in fifth in the keirin at the world track championship Sunday in Roubaix, France. Germany’s Lea Sophie Friedrich crossed the finish line first in 11.

ROUBAIX, France — Canadian Kelsey Mitchell came in fifth in the keirin at the world track championship Sunday in Roubaix, France.

Germany’s Lea Sophie Friedrich crossed the finish line first in 11.189 seconds ahead of Japan’s Mina Sato and Yana Tyshchenko of Russia. 

American Madalyn Godby was fourth ahead of Mitchell.

Lauriane Genest of Levis, Que., the Tokyo bronze medallist, finished 10th in the event following her fourth-place finish in the B Final.

On Friday, Mitchell beat Genest for bronze in the women’s sprint – Canada’s only medal at the world track championship. 

Maggie Coles-Lyster of Maple Ridge, B.C., came in 12th in the women’s points race.

Nick Wammes of Bothwell, Ont., lost the men's sprint 1/8 final to Poland’s Rudyk Mateusz.
