The BC Coroner’s Service is continuing to investigate an accident on a South Delta farm last week that killed a young girl.

Few details are known about the tragedy, but through the Delta fire department, the Optimist has learned that it appears a three-year-old child was involved in a farming accident.

“It appears an older tractor tire fell on the child. I understand that it had been leaning up against a barn,” said deputy fire Chief Brad Watson. “I’m not sure what happened or how it happened – I can’t comment on that."

Wilson said the call came in just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13.

Firefighters who responded to the call, administered first aid until paramedics arrived on scene, he said.

The B.C. Corners Service is not providing any further details including the exact location of where the incident took place.

“On the record, I can tell you we are in the early stages of a fact-finding investigating in the Lower Mainland region involving the death of a young girl on Wednesday,” said spokesperson Andy Watson. “The Coroners Service’s fact-finding investigation will look to determine who died, how, where, when and by what means. Due to the privacy of the deceased, per the Coroners Act and provincial privacy legislation, we are not releasing or confirming ID. I have no other information available at this time.”

The Delta police department said the investigation is with the coroner and that the department has no comment.
