Shearer and his wife Colleen have lived and raised a family in Tsawwassen since 1982 when they moved from Toronto to open a new sales territory for his company.

His success building the business and establishing his company in Western Canada attracted several local start-up companies to recruit Shearer to lead their sales and marketing organizations. Two of the companies, Dees Communications and Hothaus Technologies, were started in Delta.

Shearer was also recruited to lead a number of volunteer organizations, starting in 1992 with the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen. He has been the president of the Rotary Club, president of the Delta Hospice Society, president of Beach Grove Golf Club and district governor for Rotary District 5040.

Shearer made an unsuccessful run for Delta council in October’s civic election.

"We were very impressed with Garry’s insights and leadership when he facilitated a strategic planning session for the chamber in the past,” said Les Voros and Yvonne Anderson, current chair and incoming board chair for the chamber. “Garry has the business acumen and strategic thinking we need to take the Delta Chamber and our membership to the next level."

The board thanked outgoing executive director Tom Awrey, who is leaving for family reasons, for his dedicated work over the past three years. The board said Awrey is leaving the chamber in a good financial position for its development and growth in the future.
