Ladner Mom overwhelmed by number of Christmas messages

Ladner’s Owen Hill Davie is seen with just a fraction of the Christmas cards he’s received this year.

The Christmas cards came pouring in for six-year-old Owen Hill Davie this holiday season.

His family put a call out for cards which are “the perfect gift for him,” said his mom Stephanie Hill Davie.

“He loves things that are light, that he can carry. He likes the way paper crinkles in his hands,” she said.

Owen, who’s dealing with a host of medical issues, has received cards from far-away places like Australia, England, Germany, Ireland and Russia.

But the majority of the 1,978 cards he’s received as of Wednesday have come from the Delta area.

“It’s an overwhelming response and we’re so appreciative for everyone taking time to send something to our little guy,” said Hill Davie.

When cards arrive in the mail they pick somewhere cozy to sit, either the couch, in front of the Christmas tree, or the bed, since the youngster has been quite ill this holiday season, and each one is opened up and read to Owen.

“He physically touches every single card,” said Hill Davie.

She said people’s messages have included sharing personal experiences, words of encouragement as well as saying how Owen has provided inspiration.

Some of his medical issues include being unable to sit up, walk or stand due to low muscle tone, airway issues and feeding difficulties. He is also non-verbal.

“Head to toe there’s probably not a single body part that isn’t affected,” said Hill Davie.

There is a Facebook page, Hope for Owen, with more on the little boy’s journey.
