An old retail building that’s been around for over a century but not designated as an important heritage structure is to make way for a new building that has retail below and residences above.

A century-old building in Ladner Village will finally be coming down.

Delta council has approved a demolition permit to make way for a two-and-a-half-storey mixed use building in the 4800-block of Delta Street.

One of the small, narrow lots where the new structure is to be constructed is currently occupied by the heritage building that’s last use was home to a barber shop.

It’s been over two years since council gave conditional approval to the application and now the site has new owners who have been given an extension until late January 2020.

Planning director Marcy Sangret said the building is in poor condition and the new owners asked to commence demolishing it.

Coun. Dylan Kruger said the property has been a topic at the Ladner Village renewal advisory committee which sees it as a key property and is keen to see something happen there.

There are significant heritage buildings on the street, including the former McCrea’s Pool Hall and former municipal hall, but the little retail building that had many businesses operating out of it over the decades wasn’t targeted for preservation.

The new building will have 3,714 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and 6,846 square feet of residential area on the upper floors. The residential area would consist of four two-bedroom plus den apartment units.
