A pair of Delta firefighters are being praised for their swift actions literally rowing out to sea in a small boat to rescue two young boys earlier this week.

According to Delta police, officers were contacted regarding two youths in distress in Boundary Bay, about 100 metres off shore near 3rd Ave and Centennial Parkway on Monday.

“Due to the shallow waters, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre could not assist so Delta police and Delta fire headed out to the scene and managed to locate a small boat nearby,” said Delta police Friday morning in a post on their Facebook page. “Two Delta firefighters loaded their emergency equipment into the boat and rowed out to rescue the boys.

“The boys were returned to shore safely to the care of their mother. Apparently they had been playing on the beach at low tide, boarded the boat, but lost track of time and became trapped when the tide came in. The boys were fortunately in good condition after their escapade, just cold and wet.”

Fire Chief Paul Schofield told the Optimist that the boys were stuck for about three hours.

He said the rescue was another example of Delta police and Delta fire working together as a team to help someone in need.
