Delta council is helping the Ladner Business Association (LBA) light up Ladner Village.

At its March 11 meeting, council approved up to $15,000 in annual funding for the next four years to support the Light up Ladner Village campaign and other community initiatives hosted by the LBA.

According to a Delta staff report, the 2019 contribution from Delta is proposed to be made from council contingency funds while contributions for the remaining three years will be included in Delta’s annual operating budget.

The Light up Ladner Village campaign adorns the trees on 48th Avenue, Delta Street and Haviland Street with clear LED lights from October to March. As a result, Ladner Village sparkles every night from dusk until 11 p.m., adding atmosphere and cheer in the dark and sometimes dreary winter months.

The LBA, with support from the City of Delta, is in the third year of a three-year campaign to light up Ladner Village throughout the winter.

“I fully support this initiative and the LBA,” said Coun. Dylan Kruger. “I have noticed a huge improvement in terms of the ambience in the village with this initiative and frankly a lot of people think the city already funds this, so I think it is very appropriate that we contribute to their campaign. It benefits the entire community.”

Coun. Alicia Guichon said the LBA plays a vital role in the community by hosting a myriad of community events, all run by volunteers.

“This is exceptional because all these business owners are busy, but they really take the time to give back to their community,” said Guichon. “It really speaks highly to the LBA. It’s a really strong group advocating for so many businesses. I think the Light Up campaign is wonderful and I’d like to see it continue.”
