Social media was abuzz in the weeks leading up to and after Halloween with a litany of complaints and concerns over fireworks being set off in Delta.

City manager Sean McGill confirmed with the Optimist that Delta does have a bylaw that prohibits fireworks.

“Delta has a policy and bylaw that prohibits fireworks. You can get a permit and it is a process to get a permit… I think we had two issued this year,” said McGill. “What people are and have been complaining about are people who are just firing off fireworks. Police do respond, but once they arrive, in many cases they have left the scene of the complaint. We are looking at expanding our bylaw officers so that will give us a lot more people on the ground who will now be able to better enforce this bylaw.”

McGill said Delta’s bylaw office didn’t receive a large uptick in complaints.

“The answer is no and Delta police only responded to 21 or 22 calls, so we seem to be seeing more complaints on social media and Facebook than actual calls to bylaws,” said McGill.

“It’s obviously very intense over a short time frame, but I think we have to do a better job and look at other opportunities for education and or enforcement.”
