More pickleball courts are coming to Delta.

Delta council has approved a construction contract of just over $1 million to provide pickleball courts at Dennison Park in Tsawwassen and Chalmers Park in North Delta.

It’s part of an overall plan to expand the number of pickleball courts in Delta over the next three years.

Chalmers, which parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz said currently has three tennis courts in poor condition, will be expanded to have eight dedicated pickleball courts and two tennis courts. Dennison will have four new dedicated pickleball courts and other upgrades.

A report to council notes $195,000 is also available from a parks 2019 capital plan for resurfacing and relining outdoor sport courts at 8A Avenue, Mountain View Park and Endersby Park.

A report this spring on a proposed sport court improvement program, which was endorsed by council, set timelines for projects, noting Delta has 40 publicly accessible outdoor tennis courts and only three dedicated outdoor pickleball courts.

“Participation in the sport of pickleball is expanding at a rate far faster than other sports. Pickleball is played inside gymnasiums and on three dedicated outdoor courts currently. To help address the shortage of dedicated pickleball courts, additional lines have been painted on top of tennis courts in several locations; however, these lines do not fully address the sport's requirements for suitable play,” the report explained.

The plan over the next three years will also see expansion at Cromie Park in Ladner and additions elsewhere, including Pebble Hill Park in Tsawwassen.

The report adds Chalmers, Dennison and Cromie parks have been identified by the Delta Pickleball Association as being the most suitable for providing facilities for the sport.

Kuntz told council the tennis community was also consulted and endorsed the plan to focus this year on Dennison and Chalmers. The projects are to be substantially completed this fall with painting and line work completed by next spring.
