Delta police investigating an early morning fire Oct. 2 at Brass Eagle Tattoo Company say the cause is considered “suspicious” and an investigation is ongoing. Police have released their findings to insurance and restoration companies, but will not yet comment on the probable cause of the fire.

“Investigators have spoken with witnesses and residents but also want to put out a broader call to the community,” said Delta Police spokesperson Cris Leykauf in a news release. “If you were in the general area of 48 Ave around 4:50 am and saw anything suspicious, please contact Delta Police or Crimestoppers.”

Tenants residing above the shop all evacuated to safety, although two police officers responding to the call were sent to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation. The City of Delta is currently working with the impacted residents in the five units above the store to ensure they have alternative accommodations.

Firefighters were able to keep two neighbouring businesses – The Flower Shop in the Village and Ladner Nails and Esthetics – mostly undamaged, although the suites above suffered extensive smoke damage.

Nobody from Brass Eagle answered the phone or responded to a voice mail seeking comment, and a Facebook message sent to co-owner Casey McAskill did not get a response before this story was posted.

Two separate online fundraisers set up to help the owners of Brass Eagle have so far raised a combined $350.

“In an effort to help them get back on their feet I ask that you join me in helping them rebuild,” wrote GoFundMe.com campaign organizer Tyler Sanders. “The staff and owners of the shop are some of the kindest most welcoming people I have ever met. Every little bit will help. If you can't afford a few extra bucks please just spread the word so we can get them back up and running as soon as possible.”

This story will be updated if more information becomes available.
