Delta city staff have helped raise $16,000 in a campaign called Delta4Delta to assist local charities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

City of Delta staff, mayor and council have stepped up to help out a number of local organizations and charities.

Earlier this month, City Manager Sean McGill started a fundraising campaign called Delta4Delta. More than $16,000 was raised in the first week, including $12,000 over the first weekend.

“I challenged staff over the weekend to raise $5,000 for non-profit organizations. Staff raised $12,000,” said McGill during Thursday’s virtual town hall. “Staff understand that we are very fortunate and there are a lot more people who are going through challenging times than us, and it didn’t take a lot of prompting from me…really just giving them direction and an avenue to direct funds. I have heard from so many charities that are so thankful for that donation in this time of need. Our staff are very excited about this.”

After raising more than $16,000 in the campaign’s first week, staff are hoping to continue the fundraising momentum through regular contributions and opening up the campaign to people in the community who are able to contribute to these local charities:

·       Boys and Girls Clubs Foundation of South Coast BC

·       Earthwise Society

·       Deltassist

·       Kidsport

·       Ladner United Church

·       Lighthouse Church PAOC

·       Little House Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Society

·       Reach Child and Youth Development Society

·       WINGS Fellowship Ministries.

At the May 11 council meeting, Mayor George Harvie announced the donation of 10 per cent of his annual salary to two local charities: Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation and Deltassist.

Other members of council have also made donations to local charities that are working to support those in the community who need it most.

“During challenging times like these, vulnerable people in our community are impacted more greatly than anyone else,” said Harvie. “We are fortunate to have many charitable organizations doing tremendous work in Delta and I am pleased to support them. I am so proud of the leadership shown by staff and council by giving some of our good fortune to support those who need it most and encourage all those in the community who are able to do the same. We will get through this together.”
