The East Ladner school and surrounding community was overjoyed by local artist Gary Nay, with the help of students, painted the tribute to the community last summer as a way to welcome the students back from their summer break.

Last weekend, several posts popped up on social media showing pictures of the mural defaced with foul language and commentary about the COVID-19 pandemic. Those commenting on the Facebook groups expressed their disappointment that someone would be so heartless to deface such a beautiful image.

Delta School District communications manager Cathryn Tucker told the Optimist in an email, that school principal Keri Hanlon was in touch with Nay immediately after the incident occurred and the mural was fixed.

Tucker said the school district encourages anyone who may have information regarding the damage to report it to Delta police.
