South Delta’s lacrosse box could undergo a major renovation.

Delta’s parks, recreation and culture commission recently discussed a proposal from the Delta Lacrosse Association to put a cover on the lacrosse box next to the Ladner Leisure Centre.

Todd Stewardson, acting parks, recreation and culture director, told the Optimist preliminary design work has been done and the next step would be to report to Delta council to seek further direction.

“The design is preliminary and a little bit more than conceptual. We’ve kept the lacrosse community in the loop in terms of some of the higher level steps we’ve been undertaking,” he said.

As far as who will pay for the structure, Stewardson said that still has to be worked out.

“I think we’re hearing from the consultant we could build it there, so our next discussion with the lacrosse community will be whether we envision the right kind of facility in their mind, or whether it needs to be added to or scaled back. Then we have to talk about where do we go from here, including what are they committed to in terms of use and if there’s a fundraising component there,” he added.

In a presentation last year, the lacrosse association noted the proposal would allow field lacrosse teams to practice and train during wet winter months, which would lessen the load on the turf field at Holly Park.

“Overall, having a roof over the outdoor box with lights will provide the boys and girls of Delta with more opportunities to remain active and healthy on a more regular basis, while improving skills and development,” the association stated.

A wish list of parks and recreation projects for Delta includes a covered lacrosse box in South Delta. That project has an estimated $1.5 million price tag.

One potential stumbling block could be the desire of the Delta Gymnastics Society to expand as it has already pitched a proposal to the parks, recreation and culture commission. The lacrosse box is adjacent to the gymnastics building.
