For the second year in a row a Ladner family is rallying friends, family and others to be part of Canada’s lifeline by donating blood at the Ladner Community Centre on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Carly and Ryan Walsh-Fraser’s four-year-old son, Smyth, has recovered from a serious medical emergency he experienced last summer.

In August 2017, Smyth was rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), abnormal destruction of red blood cells caused by the E. coli bacteria. The condition can cause life-threatening kidney failure. Smyth and his mom spent 15 days at BC Children’s Hospital and as part of his treatment he received three blood transfusions and a platelet transfusion that helped to save his life.

Smyth recently celebrated his birthday in October and is happier and healthier than ever. The resilient young boy will be at the donor centre with his family Wednesday to thank people for their commitment to make a difference in the lives of patients in need.

To book an appointment today, locate a donor centre, check your eligibility and more, download the GiveBlood app available for iOS on the App Store or for Android on Google Play or visit blood.ca.
